A project funded within the thematic initiative framework of ESCalate
The Internet provides undergraduate and postgraduate students with easy access to a range of resources which can be used to develop their understanding of research methods and methodologies. These are beginning to be used in a number of ways ranging from pages of useful links through to more complex learning materials. These materials and resources have the potential to fundamentally change the ways training in research methods and methodologies is delivered and the ways research students get access to expert support throughout their courses. However, there is little collective knowledge of the range of current practices in on-line support for research training, nor understanding of the pedagogies involved. The project sought to explore current practice and the research agenda arising from this.
Aim
- To explore and share effective pedagogic approaches to research training that utilise elements of on-line support and teaching and learning.
Outcomes
- To produce exemplars of a range of practice in supporting research training that utilise elements of on-line support and teaching and learning;
- To identify potential areas of research into teaching and learning in on-line practice in relation to research training.
Two events were held as part of the project, the report of the second is the main outcome of the project:
- A workshop at the ESCalate Research Methods for Research Students conference, Institute of Education, London - June 2002 (download the report)
- A one day conference was held at Birkbeck College, University of London - September 2002.
In addition to the above links to the conference reports the following materials are available:
- The background to the project;
- Links to examples of websites related to research methods.
