The HEFCE

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) distributes public money for teaching and research to universities and colleges. In doing so, it aims to promote high quality education and research, within a financially healthy sector. The Council also plays a key role in ensuring accountability and promoting good practice.

  • LTSN
    The LTSN is a major network of 24 subject centres based in higher education institutions throughout the UK and a single Generic Centre.

    It aims to promote high quality learning and teaching through the development and transfer of good practices in all subject disciplines, and to provide a 'one-stop shop' of learning and teaching resources and information for the HE community.

    • LTSN Generic Centre
      The LTSN Generic Centre is just one part of the much larger {HYPERLINK "/"} Learning and Teaching Support Network  (LTSN). This larger network includes 24 Subject Centres based in higher education institutions throughout the UK whose role is to address learning and teaching issues specific to their subject areas. The entire network is managed and co-ordinated by an Executive. Both the LTSN Executive and Generic Centre are based at The Network Centre in York.

      Established in September 2000, the LTSN Generic Centre's mission is to broker information and knowledge to facilitate a more co-ordinated approach to enhancing learning and teaching. It does this in partnership with others, working strategically to build links across the LTSN and make connections with other academic networks and communities.

    • Escalate
      ESCalate is a Centre for staff working in Higher Education and Further Education who teach Education and Continuing Education. It is involved in a wide range of staff development activities related to promoting high quality learning and teaching in Higher Education.

    • ADC-LTSN
      The Subject Centre for Art, Design & Communication (ADC) is part of the Learning and Teaching Support Network (LTSN) established by the Higher Education Funding Councils for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland & Wales to promote high quality learning and teaching in subject communities.

      The Centre is located at the University of Brighton and operates in partnership with the Universities of Coventry and Ulster. There is also a regional delivery network which includes Cumbria College of Art & Design, Falmouth College of Arts, Plymouth University, The Surrey Institute of Art & Design, University College, Swansea Institute of Higher Education and Thames Valley University.

      Aims are to:

      • create and support a vigorous practitioner network
      • promote and share good practice in learning, teaching and assessment
      • broker knowledge across the practitioner network and with other professional and subject association / bodies

The Higher Education Funding Council for Wales is an Assembly Sponsored Public Body established in May 1992 under the Further and Higher Education Act 1992. The Council is concerned with the funding of colleges and institutions of higher education in Wales. It also has the power to fund higher education in further education colleges.

The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) was established in 1997 to provide an integrated quality assurance service for higher education institutions. Its main business is "to review the performance of universities and colleges of higher education. It does this by visiting institutions to audit their overall academic management, including arrangements for collaboration with overseas partners; and to assess the quality and standards of teaching and learning at subject level."

The website contains a range of on-line publications including guidelines for review, review reports and a code of practice  for the assurance of academic quality and standards in higher education.
