Assessment seminar - Assessment:Challenging Practice

Date(s) Thursday 17 April 2008
Venue University of Gloucestershire
Organised by ESCalate

Keynote Speaker: Sue Bloxham, Professor of Academic Practice and Head of the Centre for Development of Learning and Teaching at the University of Cumbria.

Keynote title:What are we really trying to do with assessment in teacher education? - resolving conflicting purposes and principles

Aims of the Seminar Research tells us very forcefully about the importance of assessment in higher education. It shapes the experience of students and influences their behaviour more than anything else. Despite this, university assessment practice has proved surprisingly difficult to change, bound up as it is with traditions and concerns about standards and fairness. This seminar is an opportunity to debate concerns and increase understanding of assessment practice in teacher education. It will provide the opportunity to share innovations, examining both the placement and academic assessment of student teachers. Participants will be encouraged to share their own experience and ideas for diversifying assessment methods.

Who is it for?The seminar is aimed at all colleagues involved in Initial Teacher Education who are interested in discussing such topics as assessment of school placements, involving students as assessors, assessment for retention and Masters level assessment. It is also of interest to all those with a professional interest in teacher education.

Places are limited so please book early.
