I was a failure at school but retook A-levels in my forties and achieved a good degree. Later, I found myself wanting to understand my own education and, as a Placements Tutor, that of my students. I was also fascinated by my grandchildren’s learning. Learning became the subject of my PhD thesis (Turner 2005); my research involved dialogue with students about their experiences of education, focussing on what helped and what hindered their learning.
