ESCalate Research Methods for Research Students Conference

Date(s) Friday 7 June 2002
Venue Institute of Education, London
Organised by ESCalate/Institute of Education

A very successful one-day event on teaching research methods to research students was held in June. More than 70 delegates from all over the UK registered for the event.

The plenary speakers were Martyn Hammersley of the Open University and Maria Birbili, formerly of Oxford University and shortly to take up a lectureship in Thessaloniki.

In the afternoon, four workshops were held:

  1. Preparing to implement ESRC 1+3 (Rosemary Deem, University of Bristol)
  2. Part-time research students (Dave Hustler, Manchester Metropolitan University)
  3. Teaching statistics (Sally Barnes, University of Bristol)
  4. On-line research methods (Gordon Joyes, Nottingham University).
Speakers and workshop convenors have made their notes or overheads available and the text of Hammersley's talk has also been provided.
